The House Boat® Concept: “A Port Inland”

The House Boat® concept was originally intended to demonstrate how we can adapt our construction methods to flood zones. Today the concept has evolved into an ingenious illustration of Genius Loci.*

The House Boats in Bourget-du-Lac seem to float two meters above the high-water mark, as if moored inland. Built on piles, they are aligned around a pier to which a network of walkways is attached. Very light and easy to disassemble, their metallic framework is made of steel treated with zinc to limit weight and risk of rust. In the winter, large windows throughout allow the sun's rays to penetrate, whereas in the summer, the roofs' wide overhangs, along with the surrounding trees, create natural shade.

Extremely flexible, this building technique can serve a myriad of functions, be they professional, commercial or residential.

* A Latin expression meaning “the spirit of a place.”
