The LyonTech–La Doua campus is an eco-campus designed as a showcase for techniques of sustainable urban planning and a forum for teaching, researching and facilitating the development of innovative and alternative urban design techniques. It is the site of prestigious institutions including Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and the INSA Lyon and CPE Lyon engineering schools. The renovation project will include 22 buildings, or 140,000 square meters, on this historically significant site, rebuilding them while they remain in activity using simple, functional concepts. A dedicated Project House has been set up in the middle of the campus to provide information about the site’s transformation.
INSA Lyon’s façades will be inspired by the original series-manufactured aluminum moldings designed by Jean Prouvé. Texture and modules will be added to the concrete façade of Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, as will sun blocker and thermal insulation, to maximize comfort inside.
The architectural expression of the site and its functionality will be enhanced by two further additions: corridors will be connected to certain façades to improve traffic flow, and blocks housing elevators, stairs and restrooms will be “plugged” into the building’s windowless façades. Certain parts of the roofs will be covered with vegetation and the areas housing technical facilities will be hidden from view behind metallic slats that give them a contemporary feel.
An elegant, textured-concrete base will create a feeling of unity among the buildings and each entrance will be renovated to include an awning that point the entrances and affirms the site’s new identity.
Texture and modules will be added to the concrete façade, as will brise soleil and thermal insulation, to maximize comfort within.
