Reims University Hospital

Phase 2 of the modernization and reorganization project for all activities located in the Robert Debré Hospital (HRD) and Maison Blanche Hospital (HMB) buildings.

The modernization of Reims Hospital is planned in three phases. In collaboration with Pargade Architects, our mission focuses on Phase 2, which is dedicated to medical activities and operating theaters.
This new smart building, designed to accommodate 498 beds, is conceived with a comprehensive and complementary vision:

Flexible and adaptable thanks to the compact design of continuous floor plates. The simple and minimal load-bearing structure imposes few constraints on the layout, making future modifications easier. Units have been designed in continuity and based on similar principles to ensure complete flexibility in their allocation.

Energy- and cost-efficient, thanks to high-performance insulation, a carefully balanced ratio of glazed and solid façade elements, and technical systems that are efficient, robust, and easy to maintain.

Easy and safe to use on a daily basis, thanks to Level -2, which is dedicated to logistics and enables the functional, logistical, and technical distribution across all floors.

Digital-ready, to integrate new technologies for patient journey tracking and medical record management, as well as equipment monitoring and enhanced in-room comfort for patients.

Environmentally friendly, thanks to passive thermal comfort, green roofs, planted patios with in-ground vegetation, and the use of low-carbon materials.

Transforming the patient experience

“Hospitality” is at the heart of our design. This building will form a “healing environment”. For the well-being of the patient, we have designed:

  • Units organized around large planted patios bringing light and nature
  • Bright general circulation areas open to these patios, which serve as landmarks thanks to their distinctive color and vegetation treatment
  • Reception desks at the entrance of departments to help patients feel welcomed
  • Comfortable and personalized rooms with soft, soothing colors
  • Care spaces at the heart of the units. This proximity reassures patients and allows caregivers to watch over them more easily
  • Colorful and simple signage enabling even disoriented patients to find their way in the large building
  • Facades offering a comfortable building adapted to climate change

Providing a "staff-friendly" workplace

Staff is also at the heart of our design for this project, to offer them an efficient, ergonomic, and comfortable workplace.
To achieve this, we have envisioned:

  • Care spaces at the heart of the departments to reduce walking distances, all naturally lit and glazed onto the circulation areas
  • Logistical rooms (clean linen, waste, cleaning...) located close to the care stations
  • Wide corridors, allowing easy crossing of beds, carts, and patients
  • Easy and direct connections on levels -2, -1, and ground floor with the other buildings
  • A direct red axis connecting, as closely as possible, the helipad (+4), the operating theatre (+1), and imaging (-1) via dedicated patient lifts

Patients and caregivers are placed at the heart of the design. Well-being, ergonomics, comfort, and efficiency: key priorities.

The Rotunda and its Galleries

This is a space for orientation, exchange, and information, but also a symbolic place that bridges history and modernity. We aim to restore its original architecture, including its dome. We propose creating a gallery on the upper level (ground floor) that radiates out like a star, connecting the various departments and the two monumental staircases

At the access level from the square courtyard (Level -1), we plan a central reception area around which circulation flows, complemented by a waiting area for bedridden patients located opposite the patient drop-off zone.

This is also a multi-purpose space, capable of hosting various activities. The connecting galleries from the rotunda are built in brick and reflect the architecture of the existing structure.
