Specialized Care Home in La Rochelle

Construction of a 50-bed specialized care home.

Intended to accommodate adults with multiple disabilities, or those with profound intellectual disabilities combined with motor, sensory, or somatic impairments, the Specialized Care Home (SCH) La Fontaine du Roc was designed to meet the specific needs of these individuals, for whom it serves as a place of residence. At the heart of the project: clear and intuitive pathways to help residents find their way, orient themselves, and move around with ease.

Structured around a central garden and a communal living hall, reminiscent of a real village, the project unfolds into small houses where the bedrooms are located.

From the Intimate to the Collective

We have designed a reassuring and supportive environment, conducive to social interaction while also offering private retreats and protective refuges, so that residents can always feel comfortable in their living space.

Inside each cottage, as well as in the shared spaces, residents have access to a wide variety of pathways and areas. These paths form loops where one cannot get lost: wherever you are, clear landmarks help with orientation, and you are always guided back to your starting point. Along these paths, alcoves allow residents to isolate themselves, while other spaces of various types and sizes encourage interaction. Play areas, gardening boxes, small lounges, and terraces punctuate the walking routes, inviting pauses and shared activities.

Gardens and Small Houses

The gardens – private gardens for each cottage, a shared central garden, and a public garden at the entrance – offer spaces to enjoy the sun, seek refreshing shade, or find shelter depending on the weather. Everywhere is safe, with no blind spots; you always encounter someone, and constant supervision from the surrounding buildings ensures security.

The bedrooms are distributed among cottages, each distinguished by a specific decorative treatment. You enter through a living room with a high ceiling and zenithal lighting. The bedrooms are grouped in a quiet wing, at the end of which is a small lounge opening onto a sheltered outdoor terrace. This layout allows for movement within the cottages, from bedrooms to living areas, both indoors and outdoors.
