Construction of the Chablais Child Psychiatry Center

The construction project for the future Chablais child psychiatry center carries an ambitious vision: to be a facility that cares for its patients and staff while serving as an efficient working tool and a safe, welcoming, and fulfilling place.

Located at the entrance to the town of Thonon-les-Bains, the project pays particular attention to creating a warm and inviting landscaped atmosphere.

Due to its geographical location, the site is shaped by natural and urban constraints. To provide a reassuring setting for its patients, the main façade shields the two courtyards of the day hospitals located on the ground floor. The building is designed in a comb-like layout, so that the day units wrap around their respective courtyards, offering a solid framework—a protective and containing envelope.

A caring architecture

The materials were carefully selected to meet safety, durability, and ease-of-maintenance requirements. In addition to their environmental qualities, they also help create a warm atmosphere, notably by leaving wood exposed in certain rooms.

Special attention is also given to patients’ spatial orientation. A sensory signage plan, present on every floor, allows children of all ages to find their bearings and feel safe. Through touch, they can explore the space and easily reproduce the path to their unit.

A landscape to experience, a healing garden

Designed as a true garden of sensations, the outdoor space offers multiple opportunities for play and discovery through touch, taste, and smell. The landscape also serves as a ‘canvas’ to be admired from the windows. The idea is to integrate symbolic elements of the surrounding large landscape and reproduce them on a smaller scale within themed gardens. In this way, an entire world of imagination and discovery opens up to children around the themes of Mountains, Nature, and Market Gardening.

To offer patients an environment dedicated to awakening the senses, stimulating their curiosity and imagination about the surrounding landscape.
