Medical Institute of the Alpine Arc

Institute dedicated to healthcare in child and adolescent psychiatry

The project was designed based on a clear conviction: the space and environment in which an individual finds themselves have psychological effects directly correlated with the healing process. In this sense, our design objective focuses on therapeutic architecture that supports the care pathway, in line with MGEN’s ambitions.

The Alpine Arc Medical Institute (IMAA) is intended to accommodate different types of patients, distributed according to appropriate units: a 'small' care unit with 21 beds for children aged 10 to 14, another with 26 beds for 'older' patients aged 14 to 18, both complemented by a post-crisis care unit with 17 beds for adolescents staying for three weeks, as well as a day hospitalization service for children and adolescents requiring more occasional care.

To ensure efficient healthcare services, the institute is organized around different hubs: the reception area with an administrative section, the technical platform for paramedical activities, the school unit, the restaurant with its production kitchen, staff facilities, and the logistics area.

Interior architecture

The architecture of the site is complemented by its interior design. Indeed, to support users throughout their stay in the medical institute, the project offers a custom layout that plays with colors, materials, and textures to provide a unique, secure, and soothing experience.

To create spaces for meeting, privacy, and learning, the interiors are carefully segmented. Refuge areas have been created in the child psychiatry unit, featuring fixed foam, alcoves, and elevated hideouts so that children can make them their own. These refuges are also found in the rehabilitation unit, where patients can benefit from light therapy as well as quiet spaces for relaxation or conversation.

The bedrooms follow the same design approach to improve patients’ quality of life and guarantee a private space.

Common areas are designed to encourage interaction while maintaining the initial intention of calm. The same color tones and materials are used to create a sense of continuity between the different spaces.

The spaces play with soft, soothing colors and warm, natural materials that absorb noise to create a calming atmosphere for users.
