Campus SHS

Renovation and extension of the Humanities and Social Sciences campus.

The requalification and restructuring of part of the buildings within the “Humanities and Social Sciences” domain is part of Bordeaux’s “Campus Operation”.

The existing buildings had a strong architectural character; however, over the years, services evolved and the facilities no longer met the needs in terms of space, location, lighting, or surface area.

This new campus, a welcoming place open to all, has been conceived as a space for exchange and interaction. It extends outward through an esplanade, where an attractive university library is located.

To highlight each entrance point of the various buildings, we created strong and clearly identifiable hubs. These extensions help unify the campus around a revitalized central esplanade.

Inside, living and working spaces have been optimized to meet new pedagogical approaches, with student and staff well-being as the guiding principle.

Unify and bring together – A dynamic campus

Most entrances were located at the rear of the various buildings. As a result, the esplanade was not experienced as the heart of the site, despite its natural centrality. The idea is therefore to restore this vast space to its rightful central function.

Landscape design is essential in achieving this, just as much as the architectural work carried out on the buildings. The architectural projects play a key role in shaping the perception of this space, which is a vital living area for the campus.

The university campus is being revitalized through the alignment of its buildings, which now radiate around the central esplanade crossed by the tramway — a true catalyst for new flows.

A unifying double skin

The double skin was designed to envelop the various university extensions, creating visual coherence across all buildings. The variable density of the openings provides solar protection adapted to each orientation.

A pixelated pattern was created by our graphic designers, generating a play of shadows and reflections. Changing throughout the day, this façade brings renewed dynamism to the campus.

BUDL – The University Library of Law and Humanities

The extension of the library, located to the east of the main building, enhances its uses without compromising the existing architecture. This aluminum volume, suspended above the forecourt, reinforces the library’s role as a landmark and contributes to the campus’s revitalization.

The ground floor, with its large glass surfaces, brings together the shared functions of the site’s libraries. The recessed entrance creates a covered area conducive to meetings and exchanges, opening onto activities such as the cafeteria and exhibitions.

UBM – A new architectural legibility

The Peigne and Carré buildings previously had no entrances facing the esplanade. The new extensions now clearly mark these access points, enhancing the site's legibility and highlighting the existing architecture.

These interventions make internal activities visible from the outside and are part of a broader reflection on accessibility for all. They help unify the campus and clarify the organization of services.

UB DSPEG – Targeted actions

In this area, the transformations are lighter but targeted. Building C benefits from interior insulation, the replacement of wooden joinery with aluminum in keeping with the original design, and appropriate solar protection.

Two staircases have been added on the esplanade side: one marks the central entrance with perforated cladding, while the other, wider, invites people to sit facing the esplanade and shelters a bicycle storage area. Building B receives a new insulating skin, consistent with the other extensions, while preserving the identity of its façade.

An architecture reimagined to reveal the buildings, clarify circulation paths, and establish the esplanade as the true center of gravity of the campus.
