New Nantes Hospital

Management and organisation of a large-scale project in the center of Nantes.

In September 2013, the Nantes University Hospital launched a design competition for the construction of its new hospital. In 2014, the design team was selected (Art and Build Architects, Pargade Architecte, Artelia, Signes Paysages), and as the start of construction approached in autumn 2021, the team was no longer able to carry out the project and the CHU launched a new call for tenders to ensure the project management of execution.

With our experience in this type of context, where we must forcefully integrate a project that we did not design, and demonstrate immense pragmatism and a sense of perspective on all the problems encountered, we responded and were named the winners.

Since Patriarche did not participate in the project management competition at the time, and is not a stakeholder today with the Nantes University Hospital, we approach this role with humility in order to continue the project while respecting the initial design and without reinventing it.

Our bias is to build without changing, not to upset the choices already made, but to be a force of proposal, especially for the control of the project economy and the respect of the schedule. We integrate all the disciplines necessary for the emergence of solutions that are increasingly conscious, responsible and anchored in the long term. The design studies, completed and excellent, are the common base of all its new actors that are the master of execution and the builders.

A team up to the challenge

This team has therefore committed its best resources to deliver the Nantes University Hospital on schedule and, above all, on budget. Patriarche major asset is that it has qualified engineers and economists with a thorough knowledge of hospital projects to ensure that the project is delivered in accordance with the client’s objectives.

The challenges of this team are clear :

  • To provide a physical presence on a daily basis in order to build a relationship of trust with the project owner and the contractors throughout the construction period.
  • To provide precise expertise, the essence of which lies in the complementary skills of each member of the group.
  • To be available and meet the client’s expectations by being a force of proposal to build a university hospital that will respect the architectural prescriptions.
  • To be aware, each day, with pragmatism, modesty and realism, of the magnitude of the stakes of this university hospital which will have to be an example in terms of functionality, constructive system and use.

At the heart of the site, a full-fledged agency has been set up, bringing together our teams of architects and engineers. They are responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of the project.

Nearly 110 people are working on the project, in addition to 575 journeymen and around 100 people from the management teams of the general contractors companies (Vinci, NGE Bâtiment, and Legendre-EGTPO-GCC consortium). At the peak of the project, more than 1,200 people from all trades will be on site, ready to deliver the new hospital in early 2027.

An exceptional hospital district capable of meeting new challenges in healthcare, research and teaching.

An agile, responsive, and demanding project management led by Patriarche, with a dedicated project agency established in the heart of the Île de Nantes.
