Nantes' New Hospital

The largest hospital construction project in Europe.

In September 2013, the Nantes University Hospital (CHU) launched a design competition for the construction of its new hospital. In 2014, the design team was selected: Art and Build Architectes, Pargade Architectes, Artelia, and Signes Paysages.

As construction approached (autumn 2021), the CHU parted ways with the initial design team and issued a new call for applications to appoint a new execution project management team.

Drawing on our experience in this type of context—where we must fully integrate a project we did not design ourselves—and our ability to approach challenges with pragmatism and perspective, we stepped up and were selected as the winning team.

Our approach is to build as designed, without altering the decisions already made, while also being proactive—particularly in managing the project’s budget and ensuring the timeline is met.

We bring together all the necessary disciplines to develop solutions that are ever more conscious, responsible, and built to last. The design studies serve as the common foundation for all new stakeholders, including the execution project manager and the construction teams.

A team equal to the challenge

This team has therefore mobilized its best resources to deliver the new hospital on schedule and, above all, within budget. Patriarche’s key strength lies in its in-house qualified engineers, economists, and architects, with deep expertise in hospital projects, enabling successful delivery while meeting the client’s objectives.

The team’s goals are clear:

• Ensure a daily on-site presence to build a relationship of trust with the client and contractors throughout the construction period.

• Provide precise expertise, rooted in the complementary skills of each member of the consortium.

• Be available and responsive to the client’s expectations, while proactively contributing to the construction of a hospital that respects the architectural specifications.

• Maintain daily awareness—with pragmatism, humility, and realism—of the scale of the challenges posed by this hospital, which must become a benchmark in terms of functionality, construction systems, and user experience.

A dedicated agency bringing together our teams of architects and engineers has been established at the heart of the construction site. They oversee the project’s coordination and successful execution on a daily basis.

In total, nearly 110 people are working on the execution project management for this site, alongside 575 tradespeople and around a hundred staff members from the management teams of the structural works companies (Vinci, NGE Bâtiment, and the Legendre-EGTPO-GCC consortium). At the peak of construction, more than 1,200 professionals from all trades will be mobilized to deliver the new hospital by early 2027.

Agile, responsive, and demanding project management led by Patriarche, with a dedicated project office established in the heart of Île de Nantes.
