Le Grand Clos

Creation of 57 housing units promoting residents' well-being in an exceptional landscape.

The development of the Grand Clos neighborhood, located on the first hills above Chambéry, provided an opportunity to offer a different kind of living environment.

The project consists of a hamlet of 14 buildings designed as intermediate housing. This scale allows for integration into the continuity of an existing hamlet, maintaining a size close to that of single-family homes.

The design is modern and environmentally conscious, offering architecture with character—simple yet elegant. In terms of thermal performance, spatial organization, and architectural quality, this housing complex aims to optimize the well-being of its residents.

Sustainable urban planning

The built environment consists of a scattered fabric of single-family homes surrounded by abundant vegetation. The site's landscape qualities stem from its wooded, natural character and its connection to the broader surrounding scenery.

Each “house,” with a width never exceeding 13 meters, fits into a road network that connects seamlessly with existing pathways.

Numerous visual openings offer views of the valley and surrounding mountain ranges. From the main roads, pedestrians can enjoy the southwest-facing landscape, with each house perceived as no more than one story high.

Parking is discreetly integrated, and no alignment of vehicles disrupts the visual quality of the neighborhood. The result is a picturesque vision, a harmonious ensemble—a place where life is pleasant and social interaction can flourish.

This layout gives ample space to vegetation, and the whole blends harmoniously with the surrounding hillside landscape.

A modern approach to housing design

Through-living room :

25 housing units located on the top floors are organized into two main sections: one dedicated to bedrooms and bathrooms, and the other to the main living area.

Its proportions—3.60 by 12 meters—allow for a clear division into three zones: a dining area with space for a large table, an open kitchen with a central island for gathering, and a living room for relaxing comfortably while enjoying the views.

Whereas in conventional housing these zones are often “blended” and poorly defined, the layout here is more functional and tailored to the lifestyle of a couple with two children.

The ergonomic design supports high-quality modern furnishings, reducing the feeling of crowding that can come with a single square-shaped space.

The space is fully dual-aspect, offering two view options—toward the valley and toward the mountains.

The projected perspectives toward the outside are longer, creating a greater sense of openness.

Duplex :

About half of the apartments are organized as duplexes.

This typology is particularly appreciated for its ability to recreate the qualities of a house, as it reintroduces verticality into the living space.

The living area is located on the upper level to benefit from unobstructed views over the valley.
