Biosphere

Renovation and development of the Montreal Biosphere

The Biosphere, originally created as the United States pavilion for the 1967 World Expo, became a Montreal landmark transformed into an environmental museum in 1995 after surviving an accidental fire in 1976. Today, under the management of the City of Montreal and Environment Canada, it continues its modernization as part of the Space for Life network.

In this context, Patriarche is involved in several renovation and development aspects, respecting and reinterpreting the original architecture. The work includes the refurbishment of the original roofs and metal platforms. On the belvedere, a new volume is added to accommodate a sanitary block, improving the services offered to visitors. A transformation of the museum spaces is also planned, ensuring continuity in educating and inspiring future generations on environmental issues.

Panorama and Light

Perched at the top, Room 7 is organized around three fully glazed façades, offering direct views over Montréal, the St. Lawrence River, and Parc Jean-Drapeau. The design structures the space without compromising the panorama. A continuous built-in unit in semi-reflective steel runs along the façades, discreetly integrating technical functions—including services and heating—to maintain a constant focus on the landscape.

Walls and metallic surfaces, subtly reflective, capture variations in daylight throughout the day and visually extend the surrounding scenery into the interior. Overhead, a fine metal mesh ceiling references the dome’s industrial language while concealing technical equipment. The result is a clear, functional space where architecture recedes just enough to foreground the exhibition and the city beyond. Lighting, controlled by a time-based system, follows the natural cycle of daylight, shifting from cooler tones during the day to warmer atmospheres in the evening.

Black Box and Immersive Experiences

Room 6 is conceived as a museum space that can be transformed into a black box. The 3D view illustrates this potential, enabling the presentation of immersive experiences. Every detail is designed to integrate seamlessly and disappear, creating a neutral backdrop that meets museum standards while ensuring a high degree of flexibility for diverse content.

Heritage and Contemporary Vision

Patriarche’s interventions honor the original designers’ constructive intent while updating the Biosphere to meet contemporary needs. A precise and considered approach, embedded within a broader strategy of upgrading and enhancing the existing building.
