Construction of a Geriatric post-op care and physical therapy unit, for 92 patients, French Red Cross at Saint Alban en Leysse.
The project involves building a Physical therapy and post-op care unit, for 92 patients, and the infrastructure necessary to the building’s function, (hospital pharmacy, kitchen,…)
In order to face the increase of Chambéry’s aging population, it became necessary to enlarge the existing building.
For practical reasons the extension had to communicate directly with the older building. It will ultimately house the doctor’ offices, the physical therapy rooms, and the day clinic.
Organization, Layout, composition and volumes of the project
A ground floor supports 3 levels, whose organization and composition are the result of clear and simple principles, which are based on the building’s purpose.
Reception, services and logistics :
Due to the site’s topography, the ground level is really set deep into the slope, and serves as the foundation of the upper levels which are completely detached from the land, and benefit from clear open views on the surroundings. The main entrance is set in the South East side of the ground floor, and leads directly to the reception area (reception Hall and secretaries) and to the various services accessible to the public : a restaurant with seating for aproximately 60 persons, a hair salon, and a prayer room.
Accomodations and healthcare
The 1st , 2nd and 3rd levels are set aside for hosting patients and physical therapy activities specific to each unit. The project totals 83 rooms, which include 9 double rooms (hence 92 beds), and the entire building is handicap-accessible.
The three levels are organised around a clear and functional layout, which favors quality of space and flux optimization. Two bedroom areas on north and south end of the building are organised around patios that channel natural light deep into the building.
Physical therapy
The first level’s main purpose is to open the new building onto the existing services. This is achieved by creating a gallery linking old and new, and enabling both patients and medical personnel to fully use and benefit from the services offered by the medical center.
Materials and colors
The elevations open out generously to their surroundings and are enhanced by outdoor maintenance walkways. Their function is mainly to filter light and cool down the outer shell of the building.
The contrasts of materials and colors give the project a strong identity and reinforce the way in which we read each space : the cement underlines a feeling of protection, the brightness of the white concrete and the warmth of wood underline the contemporary aspects, by blending in with the building’s environment. The simplicity of volumes brings coherence to the whole.
Physical and rehabilitation therapy
Located on the East side of the building, this rehabilitation unit consists in one entire level which connects at the building’s lowest point.
