World bicycle centre Plant, research centre, showroom B’twin (the bicycle brand of the Oxylane group – Decathlon) constructed its brand village within the metropolis of Lille to bring its teams together and become the leading global bicycle brand. The Altadis site was converted with the main aim of hosting the B’twin brand and Decathlon’s international industrial management division.
Extending over a surface area of 85,970 m2 the building houses showrooms, engineering offices, test laboratories and industrial prototype workshops. A bicycle assembly plant and a components warehouse complete the operational buildings. The site is completely open to visitors, who have access to the test zones and the indoor and outdoor sports areas. They will be able to discover the entire creation and development process, from the design stage right through to marketing.
FOCUS by Bernard Maillet
The existing site is part of the Lille region’s industrial heritage. The architecture of the buildings is typical and particular attention has been paid to the construction design. On an exceptional scale, 600 metres long by 162 metres wide, the building is above all functional, with a post and beam structure based on an 18 metre by 12 metre module.
The brick facades are marked by elegant white mouldings defining the openings. Extensively glazed on its north and west facades, the building is bathed in light by a system of light sheds covering a surface area of 45,360 m². A fine industrial framework in bolted metal sections supports the structure.
Within the framework of the refurbishment project, our aim was to restore strength to the building by highlighting these remarkable elements. The progress made in terms of materials, glazing and metal panels has provided additional durability and has made it possible to bring the building into compliance with today’s standards. Our operations in respect of the functional conversion remain streamlined and elegant, combining the metal and glass structure in counterpoint to the old building featuring brick.
